TOPIC: POWER UNDER CONTROL
Key scripture for Today
James 1:19
“Be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”

If I were to ask you, what is the most powerful thing in this world ? Your answer may be, Animals like the elephants or whale. They’re truly powerful. Outside the animal kingdom, you may say the most powerful thing in the world are space

shuttle engines, that enable the shuttle to break free from gravity and soar into space, or maybe nuclear tipped missiles that can be shot and then controlled by a joystick hundreds of miles away, with amazing accuracy! Maybe Missiles or bombs that can destroy cities, or lay waste to entire countries. Or could it be an illness, a disease that can ravage the body and destroy human lives, like cancer? What if the most powerful thing in the world is YOUR TONGUE ? When Dr. Martin Luther King said, “I have a dream.” His words brought hope to hundreds of thousands of people, across all sorts of cultural, and ethnic barriers. His words revealed his vision and transplanted it in the hearts of others, transforming their thinking, changing their perspectives. JFK said “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” Those words impacted hundreds of thousands of citizens to move from consumers to contributors. They inspired others to volunteer and work on behalf of others for the betterment of the country. Nothing that powerful should be without control, little wonder James instructed in our key scripture “Be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”

We must learn and allow the Holy Spirit help us control our words, Proverbs 17:28 tells us that “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue”. Let me share some truths on bringing your tongue under control.
1. CONFESS – Quit making excuses for your tongue, and confess your negative speech as the sin it is. Until you admit you’re sinning, you’ll never have victory. Proverbs 28:13 “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy”
2. PRAY – Second, get help where help is available. Ask for God’s help. James 4:2 …you have not, because you ask not. James says the reason we don’t have control, the reason we don’t have the things we desire is because we don’t ask God for them. If you want victory over your tongue, pray about it and ask for God’s help.
3. SPEND TIME WITH GOD - Matthew 15:18 “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man”. Vocabulary is not hereditary it is born out of relationship. The language you speak is indicative of the company around, if your words must change you must spend time with God in the study of His words until they become your language.1st Corinthians 15:33 says “Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character."

Beloved, your words can ravage an entire community and most definitely set you free or endanger you. Let me close with the story of a state trooper who pulled a man over for speeding on a deserted road. Since the road was clear and the weather fine, the trooper thought not to give the man a ticket, and let them off with a warning. He even complimented both the man and his wife for wearing their seat belts. At that point the woman leaned over and said, "Well, officer, when you drive the speeds we do, you have to wear them." That’s when the trooper wrote the ticket and arrested both of them. Remember “Power is Nothing without Control” (anonymous).
Let us pray
Father, grant me the power to keep my words under control in Jesus name. Amen.
